"AA" ADD-A-PHASE®

The Type "AA" ADD-A-PHASE® contains a load sensing circuit which allows the run capacitors to be automatically switched in and out with increases or decreases in the motors load requirements. In this way, the converter can maintain a good current balance to motors whose loads are varied, while maintaining the excellent efficiency of the original ADD-A-PHASE®.

Equipment whose loads vary more than 50%, such as hydraulic elevators, balers, and compactors, can now be supplied three-phase power from an efficient ADD-A-PHASE® unit rather than a rotary phase converter. Previously in these applications, a rotary converter had to be oversized to handle the short term overloads placed on the motor. Most of the time, however, these motors are not under much load. The oversized rotary units are very inefficient in this situation, using almost as much power as the motor to maintain their function.

In addition, the Type "AA" ADD-A-PHASE® requires no special start circuits with time delays and additional contactors for automated applications, since they do not have to "come up to speed" like a rotary converter would. The ADD-A-PHASE® units are also much quieter than rotaries, which can be advantageous in elevator and other applications where the equipment is located inside.
